Petersfield RFC is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Vice-President Brian Hargreaves, who passed away at the age of 91. Brian was a cherished member of our rugby family, whose unwavering dedication, generosity, and love for the club spanned decades.
Brian’s connection to Petersfield RFC began in 1980, through his daughter Elspeth and her husband, Tim Garner, who later became the club captain during the 1995/96 season. Initially attending matches as a spectator, Brian’s enthusiasm for rugby and the club’s community led him to become more involved over time. Encouraged by Tim’s active role, Brian began helping behind the bar, which marked the start of a much larger commitment to the club.
Working closely with Dave Auger, Brian contributed greatly to the club’s finances, taking on bookkeeping responsibilities and ensuring the club’s financial stability. His meticulous approach and dedication earned him the respect and admiration of everyone at Petersfield RFC. He became a Vice-President in recognition of his many contributions, a role he carried with pride and humility.
Even in his later years, Brian’s passion for the club never waned. Despite moving into a care home, he was always keen to hear updates about Petersfield RFC and remained a steadfast supporter. He also played an active role in the Hampshire section of the Wooden Spoon Society, helping to raise funds for this worthy cause.
Brian was a familiar and much-loved presence at the annual Vice-Presidents’ Lunch, where his warmth and good humour enriched the event. A memorial service to celebrate Brian’s life will be held at St Peter’s Church at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, 26th November 2024, followed by a wake at the clubhouse from 3:00 pm.
We encourage all those who knew Brian to join us in reflecting on his incredible contributions and paying tribute to a man who gave so much to our club and community.
Rest in peace, Brian. You will forever be part of the heart and history of Petersfield RFC.
