Founded in 1995 by a group of enthusiastic players from Petersfield RFC, the tournament has evolved into one of the largest and most exciting grassroots rugby events in Hampshire. This year’s edition promises to raise the bar even higher, as it aims to top last year’s record-breaking attendance and competition.

The buzz around the 2025 edition of the Pub 7s is palpable, with 18 teams already signed up – the highest number of entries since 2015! With just over a month to go, the organisers expect the number of teams to grow even further, potentially making this the biggest Pub 7s in the tournament’s long history. A New Twist for 2025: Player Pool

In an exciting development this year, Petersfield RFC has introduced a Player Pool for anyone who may not have a full squad but still wants to take part. Whether you’re a solo player or part of a team looking for a few extra hands, you can sign up individually through the link here, and the club will match you with other players to form a competitive team. This initiative ensures that everyone who wants to get involved has the opportunity to do so.

What to Expect

As always, the Pub 7s will offer an action-packed day of rugby, food, and drink, with a schedule that will keep you entertained from start to finish. The first group stage matches will kick off at 10:30 am, so teams are encouraged to arrive early to check in and set up.

This year, we’re introducing a new, digitised experience for the tournament. Participants and spectators alike will be able to follow live updates, view tables, and check out the fixtures directly from their mobile phones or through multiple screens situated around the site. For those unable to attend in person, we’re excited to announce that Pitch 1 will be live-streamed throughout the day, allowing fans to watch all the action unfold from anywhere!

A Truly Town-Wide Event

What makes the Pub 7s so special is its deep connection to the local community. Every pub in Petersfield has been invited to participate, and we’ve introduced a province-style system inspired by Irish Rugby to give each pub a unique identity throughout the tournament. To further bolster this community spirit, any pubs in need of assistance forming teams have been supported by a group of Petersfield RFC players, who are helping with recruitment. If your local pub hasn’t signed up yet or if they need help with a team, don’t hesitate to reach out to us here.

More Than Just a Rugby Tournament

In 2025, the Pub 7s will feature a range of new and exciting additions. For the first time, we’re hosting a Youth Rugby Tournament, showcasing some of the area’s most promising Under 16s and Under 13s. A touch rugby competition will take place, with the final being held on Pitch 1 just before the main Cup Final. If you’re interested in helping to run this tournament, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us!

But it’s not just about the kids. In partnership with University of Portsmouth Women’s Rugby, we’re thrilled to be reintroducing women’s rugby to the Pub 7s for the first time in years. The Women’s Rugby Unleashed day is free to join and open to all adult female players, regardless of ability. Simply bring a pair of boots or some trainers, and get involved!

Who Will Claim the Glory?

With so many strong teams in the mix, it’s anyone’s guess who will come out on top. Will Rugby Against Cancer become back-to-back champions? Can The Folly reclaim their Pub 7s glory after a decade away from the top spot? Or will Duke of Cumberland bounce back from last year’s narrow defeat in the final and clinch their second title in three years? The competition promises to be fierce, and the atmosphere electric.

And don’t forget, the Jerry Hicks Tankard is up for grabs again this year, awarded to the team with the best kit. It’s always a tight contest, so be sure to get creative with your designs – the competition is sure to be fierce!

A Day to Remember

Returning this year is Matt's famous hog roast, a Pub 7s tradition that always draws a crowd. Players can look forward to enjoying a complimentary serving of this delicious, tender hog roast – free for every player attending! It’s the perfect way to fuel up between matches. In addition to the hog roast, we’re excited to introduce a new Pimms bar, offering refreshing drinks to keep you cool throughout the day. And to elevate the festival atmosphere, we’re debuting a DJ booth, ensuring there’s a soundtrack to match the action on the pitch.

The Petersfield Pub 7s is more than just a tournament. It’s a celebration of rugby, community, and the fantastic pubs in the local area. Whether you’re playing, spectating, or just enjoying the festival atmosphere, this is a day that never fails to deliver on the entertainment front.
