We’re thrilled to announce the launch of Walking Rugby at Petersfield RFC, starting this Wednesday at 7 pm! This innovative version of the sport offers a fantastic opportunity for ex-players who feel they might have hung up their boots too soon. It’s an inclusive, low-impact way to keep playing the game you love, no matter your age or fitness level. And yes, there’s talk of post-match pints at the Queen’s Head in Sheet—a perfect chance to relive old rugby tales and make new connections.
What Is Walking Rugby?
Walking Rugby is a non-contact, slower-paced version of the game that’s suitable for everyone—former players, those recovering from injury, or anyone looking for a sociable and active pastime. It’s a mixed-gender game that emphasises fun, fitness, and camaraderie. The rules are simple:
No running – Players must walk at all times.
No tackling – Instead, touch below the armpit replaces tackles.
Quick passing – Players can hold the ball for a maximum of three seconds.
Low passes only – The ball cannot be passed above shoulder height.
Tries on foot – A try is scored by walking the ball over the try line.
Why Play Walking Rugby?
This version of rugby offers a host of benefits:
- A fantastic cardio workout, with sessions boosting your step count to between 4,500 and 8,000 steps.
- A welcoming environment for all speeds—from slow and steady to as fast as your walking pace allows.
- A chance to reconnect with old teammates or meet new friends.
- Sessions are casual and low-commitment—perfect for a busy schedule.
A Community Affair
Walking Rugby is about more than fitness—it’s about keeping the Petersfield RFC community connected. We aim to provide a welcoming space for ex-players, older members, and those seeking a gentle return to sport. Whether you’re an experienced rugby veteran or a complete novice, this is your chance to get involved and feel the thrill of rugby once more.
Join Us!
The sessions are completely free, and you don’t need any prior experience—just a degree of mobility and a willingness to have fun. So, dig out your trainers, grab a friend, and come along to Petersfield RFC this Wednesday at 7 pm.
Let’s make Walking Rugby a new tradition at Petersfield RFC. It’s time to lace up and take those first steps back onto the pitch—at walking pace, of course!
